The stated facts

Company and underwriter, as the company states it Figo Pet Insurance. Figo's site header and the dog sample policy state that its policies are underwritten by Independence American Insurance Company.
Species covered Dogs, Cats
Plan types offered Accident and illness plan; Wellness Powerup (rider); Veterinary Exam Fees Powerup (rider)
Accident waiting period, as stated Figo's California insurer disclosure says injury cover begins 5 days after the effective date. Its multi-state dog sample policy (form IAIC FPI POL 0320) uses 1 day for injuries, and states that orthopedic accidents in dogs fall under the orthopedic wait. Read the period in your own state's policy.
Illness waiting period, as stated 14 days from the original start date, in both the California disclosure and the dog sample policy.
Orthopedic, cruciate, and other special waiting periods 6 months for orthopedic conditions in dogs under the sample policy, with intervertebral spaces included in its orthopedic definition. An Orthopedic Waiver Form completed by a vet must reach Figo within 30 days of the effective date to shorten that wait.
Eligibility, as the company states it Dogs and cats. Figo's dog page says puppies can be covered from 8 weeks and that plans through Figo have no upper age limit. The sample policy asks for senior wellness testing as advised for dogs aged eight or older and cats aged ten or older.
Deductible, reimbursement, and limit options, as stated Deductible and reimbursement options are chosen at quote, and Figo says up to 100 percent of eligible bills may be reimbursed depending on those choices. Optional Powerups include Veterinary Exam Fees and Wellness; the sample policy also mentions an elective per incident copay.
Wellness or preventive option The Wellness Powerup is a rider in the sample policy, form IAIC FPI WELL-R 0320, paying up to the maximum in a wellness benefit schedule with no deductible or coinsurance. The schedule runs from Tier 1 to Tier 6; a wellness exam, for example, pays $15 at Tier 1 and $75 at Tier 6.
Pre-existing condition rule, as stated The dog sample treats as pre-existing any illness or injury that first showed clinical signs in the 12 months before the original start date or before the waiting period ends, plus undiagnosed conditions with the same signs. A condition counts as cured, and stops being pre-existing, once it has shown no clinical signs for 12 months.

Figo's dog orthopedic clause and its 30 day form

Figo's dog sample policy defines the waiting period as one day for injuries and fourteen days for illnesses, except orthopedic conditions in dogs, where the period is six months. Its orthopedic definition reaches the intervertebral spaces, so disc disease sits inside it, and orthopedic accidents are expressly subject to the same six months.

The escape hatch has a short fuse. The vet must complete Figo's Orthopedic Waiver Form, and Figo must receive it within thirty days of the policy effective date. For a Bernese Mountain Dog or a Basset, that means booking the exam in the first two or three weeks. Miss the date and a knee or spine problem that starts in month four would be treated as pre-existing.

Two different injury waits on Figo pages

The California disclosure says injury cover starts five days after the effective date. The undated multi-state sample says one day. Neither is wrong for its own form, but owners outside California should not assume one day without seeing their own declarations.

Look-back, cure, and the kidney exclusion

Figo's pre-existing rule looks back twelve months before the start date. If no annual exam record exists for that year, the first documented exam after the effective date becomes the baseline, which can turn a routine first visit into the moment exclusions are written. Getting the prior year's records to Figo early avoids that.

The cure route is also twelve months: a condition with no clinical signs for that period is no longer pre-existing. Separately, the sample excludes all renal treatment and medication, and related conditions, when kidney disease was diagnosed or showing signs before the wait ended. Owners of breeds with familial kidney concerns, or older cats, should read that line closely.

Exam fees as a Powerup

The base sample excludes physical examination fees unless the Office Visit and Exam Fees rider is bought; Figo markets it as the Veterinary Exam Fees Powerup and describes it as cover for exam or consultation fees tied to diagnosis and treatment. The rider text says it does not cover annual wellness office exams, which belong to the Wellness Powerup.

Genetic conditions are listed among covered illnesses in the sample, defined as illnesses whose presence is determined by hereditary factors.

Claims through the Pet Cloud

Part VII of the sample says claims are filed in the Figo Pet Cloud by answering the online questions and uploading the paid invoice, with the vet sending medical records. Claims must be received within 180 calendar days of treatment, or as soon as reasonably practicable, and a loss is payable within 30 days after all documents arrive. Coverage cannot be confirmed by phone or email before a complete claim is filed, so ask for written terms rather than a verbal answer.
