The stated facts
| Company and underwriter, as the company states it | Prudent Pet. Its site footer says products are produced and administered by Prudent Pet Insurance Agency, LLC and underwritten by Markel Insurance Company and Markel American Insurance Company; policies sold before January 18, 2021 were underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company. |
|---|---|
| Species covered | Dogs, Cats |
| Plan types offered | Accident and illness plans; Accident-Only policy; Optional wellness endorsement |
| Accident waiting period, as stated | 5 days for accident coverage, counted from the effective date, per the Prudent Pet FAQ. |
| Illness waiting period, as stated | 14 days for illness coverage from the effective date, per the FAQ. |
| Orthopedic, cruciate, and other special waiting periods | 6 months for all knee and ligament issues on every policy. The sample policy page says a vet's orthopedic consent waiver can reduce that to 30 days, and the FAQ says the waiver must be completed and submitted within the first 30 days of the policy. |
| Eligibility, as the company states it | Dogs and cats. The FAQ says Prudent Pet never denies coverage to a dog or cat based on age or breed, and that it will not drop coverage because claims were filed. No minimum enrollment age is stated on the current pages; an older 2016 sample form excluded losses for pets under six weeks old. |
| Deductible, reimbursement, and limit options, as stated | You select the annual deductible, reimbursement percentage, and annual limit, which appear on the declarations page. Exam fee coverage is an option you choose at enrollment and can add or remove at renewal, per the sample policy page. |
| Wellness or preventive option | Optional wellness coverage. Prudent Pet's sample wellness endorsement amends the pet health insurance policy, offers Low, Medium, and High levels, and pays from a schedule with no co-pay or deductible; for example, the wellness exam line allows $30, $50, or $60 across two exams a period. |
| Pre-existing condition rule, as stated | Conditions that began before the effective date or show signs during a waiting period are pre-existing. The FAQ says some non-chronic conditions may become eligible after they are cured and the pet has been symptom and treatment free for at least 365 days, though meeting that period does not settle eligibility, and knee and ligament conditions follow separate rules. |
Knees: six months, or thirty days with a waiver
Every Prudent Pet policy carries a 6 month wait for knee and ligament issues, per the FAQ. The sample policy page adds the way out: the wait can be reduced to 30 days with an orthopedic consent waiver from your vet. The FAQ sets the timing, saying a qualifying knee and ligament waiver must be completed and submitted within the first 30 days of the policy.
Note that the waiver shortens the wait rather than removing it. A Labrador whose waiver is accepted would still have a 30 day knee wait; without one, a cruciate tear in month five would be inside the 180 day period. The FAQ adds that a knee or ligament condition occurring before cover or during that period may leave related future conditions ineligible unless the waiver was in on time.
Prudent Pet's neighboring-disc rule
The sample policy page lists IVDD as excluded when another disc in the same or a neighboring spinal region, such as cervical or lumbosacral, was treated or showed clinical signs before the effective date or during the 14 day wait. There is no separate spinal waiting period; the risk sits in this exclusion instead.
For a Dachshund, Corgi, or French Bulldog, one old neck episode could therefore affect cover for nearby discs later. Send Prudent Pet the full spinal history and ask which regions it would treat as excluded.
Exam fees are a choice you can revisit
The sample page excludes exam fees unless you chose to include them, and says that choice can be added or removed at policy renewal. It also makes poison control consultation fees depend on being enrolled in exam fee coverage. Owners of dogs that eat things they should not, a common Labrador and Beagle problem, may want that line in place.
Age, breed, and keeping cover
The FAQ says Prudent Pet never denies coverage based on age or breed and will not drop coverage because claims were filed. It also says hereditary and congenital conditions can be covered, while the sample excludes congenital defects that showed signs before the effective date or during the 14 day wait.
The 365 day cure route is narrower than it sounds: the FAQ says meeting it does not make coverage certain, and knee and ligament conditions are treated differently.
Claims at Prudent Pet
The FAQ describes reimbursement: pay the vet as usual, then send the claim form with receipts by email, mail, fax, or the online pet portal. The pages read do not print a claim filing deadline or mention paying vets directly, so ask for both before a planned surgery.
