The stated facts
| Company and underwriter, as the company states it | PetPartners Pet Insurance. Its pages and its Arizona sample policy (form IAIC PPI AI POL 007 1120) name Independence American Insurance Company as underwriter. |
|---|---|
| Species covered | Dogs, Cats |
| Plan types offered | Accident and Illness Coverage; Accident Only Coverage (AccidentCare); Defender and DefenderPlus wellness add-ons; Optional ExamPlus and Hereditary coverage |
| Accident waiting period, as stated | 2 days for injuries on the accident and illness plan, except cruciate ligament related conditions, per the plan page and the Arizona sample policy. The AccidentCare accident-only plan also lists a 2 day wait. |
| Illness waiting period, as stated | 14 days for illnesses, except IVDD, per the accident and illness plan page. |
| Orthopedic, cruciate, and other special waiting periods | 180 days for IVDD and for cruciate ligament related conditions on the accident and illness plan. The Hereditary coverage option carries its own 30 day wait in the Arizona form. |
| Eligibility, as the company states it | Dogs from 8 weeks and cats from 10 weeks living in the US, per the FAQ. Illness cover requires enrollment before the pet's 9th birthday and can then continue for life; accident-only cover has no maximum enrollment age. The plan page lists CompanionPlus as open to pets 8 weeks to 8 years. |
| Deductible, reimbursement, and limit options, as stated | AccidentCare is listed with a $100 deductible, unlimited annual limit, and 10 percent coinsurance. For the customizable accident and illness plans you choose the deductible, coinsurance, and incident or annual limits when building the policy. Optional ExamPlus, Hereditary coverage, SupportPlus, and Defender wellness can be added. |
| Wellness or preventive option | Defender and DefenderPlus are optional coverages paid from a benefit schedule; the FAQ says no deductible or coinsurance applies to them. In the Arizona schedule, flea, tick, and heartworm prevention pays $70 on Defender and $95 on DefenderPlus, and spay or neuter or cleaning pays $0 and $150. |
| Pre-existing condition rule, as stated | The Arizona form excludes conditions present before the waiting period ends and treats a bilateral condition seen on one side as pre-existing for both sides, with a cruciate tear as its example. The plan pages state pre-existing conditions are excluded. |
Before the 9th birthday, or accident cover only
PetPartners frames age as eligibility rather than a cap. Its FAQ says that for illness cover a dog or cat must be enrolled before its 9th birthday, after which that cover can be carried for life. Accident-only cover has no maximum age, and the AccidentCare page lists it for pets from 8 weeks.
For a Great Dane or a Bernese, whose breeds tend to age early, the practical deadline is well before nine. A dog enrolled at eight and a half keeps illness cover into old age; one first enrolled at nine and a day can only buy accident cover.
Hips and kneecaps sit behind an endorsement
The Arizona sample lists congenital and inherited conditions among its exclusions, naming hip and elbow dysplasia, OCD, luxating patella, spondylosis, osteoarthritis, and diabetes, unless the optional hereditary rider is bought. The FAQ puts it in plain terms: hip dysplasia is covered with the purchase of the Hereditary Coverage endorsement with your base plan.
That endorsement begins after its own 30 day wait. A Pomeranian owner worried about kneecaps, or a Labrador owner worried about hips, should see the hereditary option listed by name on the quote before paying.
Two 180 day windows
The plan page lists a 14 day illness wait and a 2 day injury wait, each with an exception that stretches to 180 days: IVDD on the illness side, cruciate ligament related conditions on the injury side. A Beagle with a disc episode in month five, or a Boxer with a ligament tear in month four, would be inside those windows.
The Arizona form's bilateral clause adds a second layer. A cruciate tear that showed signs on the left before cover began makes a later right-side tear pre-existing as well.
Exam fees, claims, and payment by check
Physical examination fees are excluded in the Arizona form unless the ExamPlus option is bought; the plan page describes ExamPlus as adding cover for exam and office visit fees.
To claim, the FAQ says to download and complete the claim form and send it with the vet invoice. PetPartners allows up to 180 days to file, and its FAQ says approved claims are reimbursed by check, so keep the mailing address on the account current. The form allows 60 days to request reconsideration of a decision.
