The stated facts
| Company and underwriter, as the company states it | Spot Pet Insurance, produced by Spot Pet Insurance Services, LLC. The Arizona sample read here is an Independence American Insurance Company form; your declarations page names the insurer on your own policy. |
|---|---|
| Species covered | Dogs, Cats |
| Plan types offered | Accident and illness plan; Accident only plan; Gold and Platinum preventive care endorsements |
| Accident waiting period, as stated | 14 days in Spot's Arizona accident and illness sample, the same period it uses for illnesses and knee conditions. Spot's waiting period article says it offers next-day accident coverage in select states, so check the declarations page for your state. |
| Illness waiting period, as stated | 14 days from the first effective date of coverage in the Arizona sample. |
| Orthopedic, cruciate, and other special waiting periods | Knee and ligament conditions are inside the same 14 day period in the Arizona sample, with no longer orthopedic or spinal wait. Spot's waiting period article points owners to the sample policy for their own state. |
| Eligibility, as the company states it | Dogs and cats from 8 weeks old with no upper age limit for coverage or enrollment, per Spot's FAQ. The FAQ also says the premium is affected by the pet's age each year. |
| Deductible, reimbursement, and limit options, as stated | You pick the annual deductible, reimbursement percentage, and annual limit at enrollment, and they are printed on the declarations page. |
| Wellness or preventive option | Gold and Platinum preventive care endorsements, paid from a schedule. Gold lists dental cleaning at $100 and an annual exam at $50; Platinum lists dental cleaning or spay/neuter at $150 and an annual exam at $50, with most other lines at $25. |
| Pre-existing condition rule, as stated | Excluded. In the Arizona sample, anything that starts during a waiting period is pre-existing; a curable condition cured and symptom and treatment free for 180 days becomes a new occurrence, but chronic conditions and knee or ligament conditions never qualify for that route. |
Spot puts knees on the short clock
In Spot's Arizona sample (form PET-P-20000-1024), one 14 day period covers accidents, illnesses, and ligament and knee conditions. Nothing in that form sets a six month knee wait or a separate disc wait.
That helps a young Labrador or Pit Bull owner on timing: a cruciate injury in week four is outside the waiting period. The catch is in the definitions. The sample defines conditions of the ligament, patella, meniscus, or soft tissue of the knee as bilateral and related regardless of cause, so one knee affects the other. If the left knee had signs before cover began, the right knee is treated the same way.
Why old knee notes matter more at Spot
Spot's cured condition route lets a curable problem that has been free of symptoms and treatment for 180 days count as new. Knee and ligament conditions are expressly left out of that route, as are chronic conditions. A luxating patella or partial tear noted in a puppy record before enrollment is therefore excluded on both sides for the life of the policy, however long the dog stays sound.
Before applying, read the whole vet history for words such as lameness, patellar, or drawer sign, and ask Spot how it would read them.
Age and price at Spot
Spot's FAQ says pets can be enrolled from 8 weeks with no upper age limit for coverage or enrollment, and that the premium is affected by age each year. A 12 year old Shih Tzu can be enrolled, and the owner should expect the age to show up in each renewal price.
Exam charges and preventive care
The FAQ says Spot plans cover exams for covered conditions, and the Arizona sample counts examinations, consultations, and laboratory tests as veterinary treatment. Preventive care is a separate endorsement in Gold or Platinum form; per the sample schedules, only Platinum pays toward spay or neuter.
Spot's 270 day filing window
The Arizona sample asks for electronic claims with itemized invoices and allows 270 days from the date of service. It also says the vet may submit on the owner's behalf and that, if the claim form says so, Spot can pay the veterinarian directly. That option is worth arranging before a planned surgery. A written appeal decision is due within 30 days of all needed information reaching Spot's appeals team.
